High Winds, Power Lines Spark Oakville House Fire

Maryland State Fire Marshalls are investigating a house fire in Mechanicsville that left $150,000 in damage.

On Sunday, May 9 at approximately 3:30 p.m., firefighting and emergency units from Hollywood, Bay District, Seventh District,Mechanicsville and Leonardtown were dispatched to a house fire at 40400 block of Coonhunters Lane in Oakville.

Over 50 firefighters arrived on the scene to discover a single family home ablaze with fire was showing on three of four sides of the structure. No one was home at the time of the blaze. A family dog was rescued from the home.

The firefight was hindered by downed live power lines at the scene. SMECO was called in to handle the power situation as crews fought the fire inside and out.

To aid in the firefight, Water Supply 5 arrived on the scene and began drafting additional water from a nearby pond. After a tough battle, the main fire was deemed under control in about 45 minutes.

Investigation revealed that high power lines that serviced the home ignited the deck. High winds were a contributing factor.
