Eight pets die in St. Mary’s house fire

Scotland, MD - A fire that originated in a kitchen claimed the lives of four dogs and four cats, plus caused $30,000 damage to a one-story home in St. Mary’s County, state investigators reported. The Tuesday, April 2 blaze on Cornfield Road in Scotland was reported shortly before 6 p.m. after being discovered by an occupant of the home. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, none of the residents were injured. “The family was notified of the fire by a working smoke detector and were able to exit the residence unharmed,” the fire marshal’s office reported.

Twenty firefighters were dispatched to the one-alarm blaze and brought it under control in five minutes. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office report, the single-family home is owned by the DC Government.

The displaced family is being assisted by the American Red Cross.
