Discarded smoking material sparked duplex fire

Indian Head, MD - A fire that caused $200,000 damage to a Charles County two-story duplex Wednesday, April 3 was sparked by discarded smoking materials, state investigators reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the blaze on Helen Court in Indian Head started in a living room shortly before 1 p.m.

Thirty firefighters responded to the one-alarm blaze and brought the flames under control in 15 minutes. There were no injuries. The occupants are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Indian Head, MD - On Wednesday, April 3 at 12:47 p.m., 61 members from Indian Head and surrounding departments along with mutual aid from NDW Indian Head and Prince George's FireDepartment (PGFD) were on the scene of a "working fire" in a dwelling with "severe hoarding conditions" on Helen Court.


The fire was put out in minutes with members in rehab and checking for extension throughout. No injuries as this time.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office was on the scene for investigation into the cause. Family of three and their dog were displaced and under the care of Red Cross.
