Join the 'March for Babies'

To the Editor:
At the March of Dimes, we promise to work tirelessly toward the day when all babies are born healthy.

Since 1938, the March of Dimes has worked to help babies get a healthy start in life. About 4 million babies were born in the United States last year, and the March of Dimes helped each and every one through research, education, vaccines and breakthroughs. Although you may not realize it, you have been touched by the March of Dimes if you or your child received a polio vaccine, you took the B vitamin folic acid before and during pregnancy to prevent birth defects, you or someone you know had a premature baby or you had a healthy baby due in part to good prenatal care at home and from your doctor or nurse.

The March of Dimes is committed to funding research to find the answers to problems that continue to threaten the lives and the health of babies.  We’ve also launched five Prematurity Research Centers to support our mission.

Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death in America. It affects about 380,000 babies born each year. Closer to home, one in 10 babies in Maryland is born prematurely. In an average week in Maryland 1,384 babies are born, 164 babies are born preterm and nine babies die before reaching their first birthday.
The March of Dimes also provides support and resources to families in the NICU wondering when or if they’ll be able to take their baby home. We also work to prevent prematurity, birth defects and infant mortality through community-based programs such as CenteringPregnancy®.

March for Babies is the easiest way to support our mission. Join the hundreds of people who walk in southern Maryland each year to raise much-needed funds. This year’s event will take place on Sunday, May 1 at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf.  Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. We welcome families, friends and individuals to attend the event. Babies are especially welcome!

Let’s walk and raise the vital funds to give every baby a fighting chance. Sign up at
