Volunteers restore World War II vet’s home

World War II U.S. Army veteran Thomas H. Gray had his home repaired by local volunteers.

Lusby, MD - Christmas in April* came early for an American patriot—two weeks early to be exact. On Friday and Saturday, April 10 and 11 volunteers with Christmas in April* Calvert County performed major repairs on the Lusby home of World War II veteran Thomas H. Gray.

Gray, 92, served in the U.S. Army during the 1940s conflict. He resides in the house with his son, Dennis, a retired federal and state police officer.

“We are reaching out to the community to show what can be accomplished by a caring community with the support of local businesses,” stated Christmas in April* Calvert County President Bill Lloyd in a press release. “It’s a wonderful experience and we hope our Calvert County neighbors will become involved.”

Christmas in April’s National Workday is Saturday, April 25. The organization's leaders scheduled the work on Gray's home as a "kickoff event" prior to the National Workday.

Volunteers repaired the roof of Gray’s home, replaced windows and a door, painted the inside and outside of the dwelling, made plumbing repairs and modified the bathroom to improve access.

"It went very well, we had a great turnout," said Steve Saunders of Christmas in April* Calvert County. "We also had strong support from the [Gray] family."

Participating businesses included Prince Frederick Dodge, Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, Dominion Cove Point, Exelon, Ace Hardware, W.H. Lloyd Construction, Cave to Castle Remodeling, Kiewit Corporation and Artic Snow Management. Also participating were United Way of Calvert County, Brooks United Methodist Church, Patuxent Habitat for Humanity and Harvest Fellowship Presbyterian Church. A few of the Calvert County Commissioners also lent a hand to the crews.

Volunteers will be doing repair and renovation work on 39 houses throughout Calvert County Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25.
