Fun in La Plata with annual bed races

La Plata, MD - The rain held off so that Celebrate La Plata’s event could get in just before the raindrops, and for the sixth year Sherry’s Angels pushed their wheels to victory in the popular bed races Saturday, April 25.

Sherry’s Angels are a team assembled in honor of Sherry Rollin Hall of Bel Alton who died at age 47 from renal cell cancer.

Her sister, Pam Butler of Nanjemoy, said Sherry formed a Relay for Life team when she learned she had cancer.

The team consists of family and friends, she explained, and included her husband Shawn Butler, nephew Daniel Swick, cousin Daquan Dunnington, and friends Eric Terrell and Chris Jinsoo.

Other teams includ 253rd Engineer Company, MDARNG, 301 Derby Dames, Chick-fil-A at La Plata, ABC Wellness & Fitness Center, Facchina Construction Company Inc., Our Place Waldorf Soup Kitchen, Relay for Life Charles County and the St. Mary’s-Bryantown Angels.

There were several mishaps. The 301 Derby Dames had a wheel fall off their bed not far from the starting line. The Chic-fil-A cow, accompanied by the Southern Maryland Hard Crabs mascot Pinch and Arnie the Armadillo from Texas Road House took a spill and Pinch ended up on the road, decided, “heck with it,” and laid across the bed while his mascot buddies rolled the bed back to the starting line.

Facchina Construction’s bed collided with hay bales at the finish line and they had to borrow another team’s bed for their final race.

All in all, it was a fun event with minimal peril and an appreciative crowd of onlookers.

It was the St. Mary’s-Bryantown Angels who turned up second best when the heat were run, so it was an Angels versus Angels for the final race, with Sherry’s Angels taking first place.

“This is the sixth year Sherry’s Angels have finished in first place,” Butler said. “We’ve used the same bed all six years.”
