On April 9, at approximately 1:43 a.m., members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division and Crash Reconstruction Team (CRT) responded to the area of Ferry Landing Road and Old Jones Road in Dunkirk for a report of a serious motor vehicle crash.

The following was determined during a preliminary investigation:
A green 2003 Ford Explorer SUV, operated by Ryan Jesse Brown, 18 year old male, resident of Owings, was traveling east bound on Ferry Landing Road when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.  The vehicle was also occupied by John Mark Faulkner, 19 year old male, resident of Dunkirk. Faulkner was seated in the front passenger seat of the vehicle.   Based on the statements and roadway evidence it is believed that Brown failed to come to a complete stop at the stop sign located at the intersection of Old Jones Road and Ferry Landing Road.  As the vehicle entered Ferry Landing Road, Brown lost control of his vehicle and entered the west bound lane of Ferry Landing Road.  The vehicle ultimately left the pavement from the north roadway edge of Ferry Landing Road.  Immediately upon leaving the roadway the vehicle struck a tree.

Brown was extricated from his vehicle.  Brown sustained head trauma in addition to other injuries and was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital.  At the time of this press release Brown remains in critical but stable condition.  Brown was subsequently transferred to Washington Hospital Center MedStar Trauma Center by ambulance.  Faulkner was treated for minor injuries on the scene and released.

Initial investigation revealed that alcohol was a factor that contributed to this crash.  The preliminary examination of the vehicle indicated that a safety belt was not being used by the operator.

DFC C. Childress of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team (CRT) is conducting an investigation into the events that lead up to the collision.  Any additional information regarding this crash should be forwarded to DFC C. Childress of CRT at or (410) 535-2800.
