Gas Leak Shuts Down Great Mills Road, Nearby Shopping Center Evacuated

One firefighter was injured and was transported from the scene for what is being described as a leg injury. The shopping center was reopened shortly after 5 p.m.

Washington Gas, HAZMAT crews and State Highway Administration were all on the scene.

The main has been repaired and business is back to normal on Great Mills Road.


Due to a gas leak, a section of Great Mills Road has been shut down while repairs are underway. 

Both directions from the intersection of Great Mills Road and Essex Road to Great Mills Road north of St. Mary’s Square are shut down. 

Shops in St. Mary’s Square have been evacuated; for additional information call the Department of Public Safety at (301) 475-4200 ext. 2124.

Fire and Rescue units are on the scene of a commerical gas leak near the St. Mary's Square Shopping Center in the 21600 Block of Great Mills Road in Lexington Park. The gas leak was reported around 3 p.m. on April 7.

A two inch main has been ruptured. Stores are being evacuated and parts of Great Mills Road are being shut down.

No injuries have been reported.
