Deandrea Smith is a true example of an extraordinary youth. At age 16, she has just been selected as the Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maryland (BGCSM).

The Youth of the Year program, which is administered by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and has been nationally sponsored by the Reader's Digest Foundation since 1947, recognizes outstanding contributions to a member's family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome.

Deandrea has been a member of the BGCSM Bayside Unit for three years. As a resident of Chesapeake Beach, she attends Northern High School, actively stands guard for flag raising ceremonies, participates in community clean-ups and regularly volunteers at the Club.

"Dee Dee, as she is affectionately known in the Club, has demonstrated a deep sense of commitment to her Club and the other members in the Club. Much of her out of school time is spent at the Club. In a very short period of time, Dee Dee has grown from being a member to a Jr. Staff member with aspirations of becoming a part-time Club Staff member,” Pamela R. Wilkerson, President & CEO of BGCSM. “Not only are we fortunate to have her as member and volunteer at the Club, but we are fortunate to have her representing Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maryland both in the regional level and also in Annapolis on March 18th competing in the State of Maryland Youth of the Year competition.”

At the State level Smith competed against eleven other Maryland Boys & Girls Club members for BGCA State of Maryland Youth of the Year title and a $2,000 scholarship. The winner at the state level then competes in New York for the title of BGCA Northeast Region Youth of the Year and a $10,000 scholarship.

While Deandrea was not named State of Maryland Youth of the Year, she was a strong competitor and will continue to represent BGCSM in the tri-county region.

BGCSM, a youth development organization, opened in 1999 as Calvert County Boys & Girls Club. The organization serves over 1,700 youth in nine Clubs throughout Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's Counties providing after school programs from 3-7:00 p.m. and summer camps in all three Counties from 7:30-5:30 p.m. to youth ages 6-18.

After school and summer camp programs focus on five core areas: Character & Leadership Development, Education & Career Development, Health & Life Skills, the Arts and Sports, Fitness & Recreation. Several specific programs that youth have the opportunity to participate in are Torch Club, Keystone Club, Smart Moves, Passport to Manhood and Career Launch.

These and other activities are created to help youth develop self-esteem and reach their full potential. For more information on BGCSM programs, visit, email or call (410) 326-2200.
