McKay’s Opens New Store; Will Provide Roughly 100 Jobs In St. Mary's

CALIFORNIA, Md. -- On March 4th, Cherry Price, assisted by her brothers Tommy and David McKay, cut the ribbon to commemorate the opening of McKay’s new flagship store. The new store is located in the former Shoppers Food Warehouse location on MacArthur Boulevard in the Patuxent Crossing Shopping Center (formerly San Souci Plaza), in California, Md.

The president and CEO of McKay’s Family Markets said that the pandemic has “made it very difficult,” but he was happy this opening day has finally come. The store was supposed to open last fall, but more precautions had to be taken to ensure the safety of the builders, and the materials were harder to come by.

David, Tommy, and Cherry are three of the eight children of Jim and Marilyn McKay, who opened their first store in 1948. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, David McKay said, “this is the first ribbon cutting that we’ve had that we haven’t had one of our parents with us. We are the next generation and we’re here to service our customers here in St. Mary’s County.”

Tommy McKay said the focus in this new flagship store will be on the items on the perimeter of the store-which includes the “best and largest seafood market in the area.”

The store has a large bakery as well as locally raised meats and produce. McKay’s also has a section that features the local Leonardtown business, Heritage Chocolates.

Despite many businesses closing during the pandemic, McKay’s has hired 85 new staff members in addition to their 15 experienced management level employees. McKay’s also has stores in Leonardtown, Charlotte Hall, and Waldorf.
