St. Mary's County Commissioner's Honor Social workers

Leonardtown, MD – It is recognized that the primary mission of those in the Social Work profession is to enhance well-being and help meet the basic needs of all people, especially those considered most vulnerable in society. In recognition of this important work the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County honored Social Workers at a proclamation ceremony during their weekly business meeting.

Social Workers embody this year’s Social Work Month Theme, “Social Workers Stand Up!,” by serving, advocating for and empowering millions of Americans each day including those in St. Mary's County.

“Social Work is one of the fastest growing careers in the United States, with almost 650,000 members of the profession,” said Commissioner Tom Jarboe (1st District). “Social Workers are the largest group of mental health care providers in the United States and work daily to help people overcome substance use disorders and mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety.”

In declaring March 2017 National Social Work month in St. Mary’s County, the commissioners recognize the numerous contributions made by America’s Social Workers and call upon all citizens to join with the National Association of Social Workers to celebrate and support the Social Work profession.
