At last month’s meeting of PRISM (Public Relations Individuals of Southern Maryland), the organization inducted a new slate of officers.  Outgoing president and founder of PRISM, Marc Apter, associate vice president at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, passed the presidential torch to Karen Smith-Hupp of College of Southern Maryland.  The other elected PRISM officers for 2006 are: President-Elect Karen Everett of BAE Systems, Secretary Robin Kendall of Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation, and Treasurer Don Thieme of Thieme Creative Media.

PRISM is in its third year of existence and the routine changing of the guard is a testament to the strength of the organization as a networking and informative alliance.  “Southern Maryland is very fortunate to have someone like Marc Apter,” said Don Thieme, “Apter had the foresight and leadership which lead him to not only conceive the idea of PRISM, but he also took action and made it a reality.”

The next meeting is noon on Thursday, April 20, at the College of Southern Maryland La Plata Campus.  For up-to-date information on PRISM’s schedule of meetings for 2006, visit

The speaker for the February meeting was David Jenkins, the Executive Director of the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland.  Jenkins introduced a new statewide program, Reality Check Plus, which will be implemented in four Maryland regions in June 2006.  Reality Check Plus is a simulation game that uses Legos© as a brainstorming medium for geographically allocating population growth, jobs, traffic patterns, etc. over the next 25 years.  The final products of the planning sessions are then conveyed to the appropriate authorities for action and implementation.  The exercises will be held in Baltimore, Western Maryland, Eastern Shore, and Southern Maryland.

The Southern Maryland program will be on June 15th, and is an all-day event hosted by St. Mary’s College of Maryland.  Over 150 community leaders – ranging from politicians to non-profits to military – will be invited to share their insights during the simulation.  The afternoon session is open to the general public.  Reality Check Plus is sponsored by a variety of organizations including the Urban Land Institute, University of Maryland and the Home Builders Association of Maryland. For more information see  If interested in participating in the afternoon session, please contact Marc Apter at 240-895-4381.
