RIDGE, Md. - Timothy “Timmy” Ridgell, current secretary and past president of the Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, passed away unexpectedly earlier this week.

His close friend, Hollywood VFD President Bill Mattingly, is shocked and saddened. In fact, he and some other friends were planning a getaway to West Virginia with Ridgell this coming weekend. "We've done that for 4 or 5 years and had the trip planned for this weekend."

Ridgell, 63, was in West Virginia when he passed away suddenly on Valentine's Day. Bill says he and Timmy became fast friends when they met at the Maryland Firefighters Convention 15 years ago. "We all enjoyed each other's company.  We've had a lot of good times at the Maryland State Fireman's Convention in Ocean City."

Timmy was very active with the Ridge VFD. Bill said, "He was instrumental when it came to fundraising. He worked a lot of nights at the carnival. He was a people person."

In addition to serving the community through the VFD, Ridgell ran for St. Mary's County Commissioner back in 2018 and operated Chesapeake Trophy with his wife, Bonnie.

When asked to sum up his friend, Bill put it this way. "Timmy enjoyed life. He always had a smile on his face. That's the best way to put it. Loved his family. Loved his grandkids.

Ridgell also loved West Virginia. Bill Mattingly takes comfort that his friend was visiting the place he loved when he passed away. "He had a home there where he would visit throughout the year.  We had good times on our yearly trip up there, lots of laughs. He was in the mountains where he loved to be."
