Statewide Coordinator of Autism Strategy- HB847

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - February 24, 2020 — State Delegate Michele Guyton (D-42B), along with bi-partisan colleagues and co-sponsors will announce an initiative to support Maryland’s growing population of citizens with Autism Spectrum Disorder during the 2020 General Assembly on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 from 12:15 – 12:45 pm in Room 406 of the House Office Building, 6 Bladen St., Annapolis, MD 21401.

This bill requires the designation of a state level Coordinator of Autism Strategy who will be responsible for working with a Stakeholder Advisory Group appointed by the Governor to develop and provide ongoing oversite of a statewide strategic master plan to address the needs of individuals and families facing the challenges of Autism.

“We have been working with the Department of Disabilities and various stakeholder and advocacy groups for over a year to draft this legislation. It is clear that too many of the needs of families and individuals on the Autism Spectrum are currently going unmet and that Maryland is unprepared to face the challenges posed to our state by a growing and aging population of citizen with Autism who do not always have the supports that they need to live independent, productive and fulfilling lives. ”

Delegate Guyton and other sponsors of HB847 who are parents of children on the Autism Spectrum will speak to the need for this legislation and describe the scope of the bill. Other speakers will include young adult self-advocates and advocacy groups.

HB 847 will be heard in the House Ways and Means Committee at 1pm. For more information about this legislation please contact Delegate Michele Guyton at Michele.Guyton@House.state.md.us or 410-841-3793.
