St. Mary’s man pleads guilty to sex abuse of minor

Leonardtown, MD - A St. Mary’s County man who was indicted last October on three counts stemming from sexual encounters with a minor female pleaded guilty Friday, Feb. 8 to sex abuse of a minor. The defendant, Paul Michael Hess, 40 of Charlotte Hall, entered his plea before Judge Michael Stamm in St. Mary’s County Circuit Court.

Hess was arrested last Sept. 27. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigation Division and Child Protective Services investigated the case. “Investigation determined that Hess had sexually abused the juvenile female over a period of time,” a police report stated. Detective Cpl. Melissa Hulse headed the investigation. During the Feb. 8 plea hearing Assistant State’s Attorney Julie White read into the record the details on how the juvenile female was violated.

Hess was represented by Public Defender Sean E. Moran.

Stamm ordered a pre-sentence investigation. A sentencing date has not been determined. Hess has been denied bond and remains incarcerated at the St. Mary’s County Detention Center.
