Man charged for littering and using harmful language

Lexington Park, MD-- On Feb.5, St.Mary's County Sheriff's Office Dfc. James Stone was conducting a community traffic enforcement task when he noticed a couple walking down Great Mills Road on the sidewalk near Canopy Liquors  

While walking the man threw an orange colored, Wise “Cheese Doodles” potato chip bag onto the ground and continued on, leaving the bag on the sidewalk.

After finishing the original traffic stop, Stone made contact with the defendant, later identified as Steven Michael Ryan, 26 of Lexington Park.

According to charging documents, " I (Stone) advised the defendant that I (Stone) observed him litter onto the sidewalk and requested he retrieve the trash from the ground and throw it away. The defendant refused and quickly became argumentative with me." 

The defendant shouted at me (Stone) derogatory slurs such as, "Man you haven't got anything better to do than to harass an (expletive) over some trash" and also saying, "Get the (expletive) out of here," according to charging documents. 

"The trash was retrieved by the defedant's girlfriend. She picked up the trash and brought it to me (Stone). Through the entire incident, the defendant's girlfriend attempted to calm down the defendant so that he would comply," according to charging documents.

Ryan was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where he was processed and held for disorderly conduct and littering.

At this time, Ryan does not have a court date scheduled. Ryan faces a maximum jail sentence of three months and or a maximum fine of $2,000.
