Bob Horton lets one fly.
Darin Young, the top-ranked dart player in the United States, attended the 20th annual TRICODA Open dart tournament, held last month at the Holiday Inn at Solomon’s Island.

A portion of the proceeds from the Tri-County Dart Association’s (TRICODA) three-day event went to benefit Hospice of St. Mary’s. The St. Mary’s County Fraternal Order of Police lodge sponsored the “Luck of the Draw” event, with all proceeds going to Hospice.

“Luck of the Draw” was a fitting name. The Bay Net photographer John Douglass was selected to shoot against Darin Young in a game of 501. It was a quick match.

Dart-throwers from far and near attended. Dozens of portable regulation dartboard stands were hauled into the large conference rooms used for the tournament. Jim Black, owner of B&B Dart Supplies was a major sponsor of the event, as he has been for the previous 19 TRICODA tournaments.

Young, of Freeland, Penn., grew up playing “Widdy” darts, also know as “American darts." Widdy darts are made of wood. They are fat in the middle, and have feathers on the end. The game is played on a special wooden “Widdy” board, though some unknowing bar owners buy the darts for “standard” dart boards because they cost less.
