The Charles County Commissioners are accepting applications for the 2007-2008 Nursing/Allied Health Scholarship Program.

Scholarships are available for County residents in the following fields: Imaging Technicians (including X-ray, MRI and Nuclear Medicine Technicians), Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Medical Coding Specialists, Social Workers, Nurses, Dental Technicians, and Speech Therapists, among others.

A five-member Scholarship Committee evaluates the applications. The Committee membership includes a medical doctor, an educator, a nurse and two other individuals as determined by the County Commissioners. Applicants are judged on aptitude, interest, ability, financial need, cumulative grade point average, and the community’s projected need for the requested field of training.

Awarded funds may be used for books, tuition, lab fees, and registration fees. The course of study must be completed at an accredited institution within Maryland, Virginia or the District of Columbia. Consideration will be given for students taking online programs. College applicants must be  enrolled in the clinical portion of their studies, or, if in high school, enrolled in the RNStat Program. Verification from their college or high school is required. Priority is given to applicants who have received this scholarship in the prior year. If funds are limited, the Scholarship Committee will consider financial need and cumulative GPA as deciding factors. The amount of the scholarship varies between $500 – $1,000, with the exact amount determined by the Scholarship Committee (based upon the total number of applicants).

Upon completion of study, recipients will be required to practice in their field of study at least two years in the County at Civista Medical Center, the Charles County Health Department, Charles County Public Schools, any Charles County long term care facility, community social service agencies, Hospice of Charles County, home health care agencies in Charles County, or a private practitioner’s office in Charles County.

Applications are now available year round and can be picked up in the Charles County Commissioners’ Office, the College of Southern Maryland, Guidance Counselor’s Office of each High School, and Civista Medical Center.
