CSM Begins Friday Night Lecture Series

  • By

Chesapeake Bay restoration, Bob Dylan and America’s healthcare are the featured topics of the College of Southern Maryland’s Friday Night Lecture Series debuting this semester at each of the college’s campuses. The first lecture will feature Biology Professor Tom Poe and a discussion on the challenges of cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay, beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 9, at the Prince Frederick Campus, Room PFA 119.

CSM’s Friday Night Lecture Series is free, open to the public and features experts from the college discussing various topics. The series will rotate among the three campuses and provides an opportunity to build community through enriching discussions.

During the first Friday Night Lecture Series discussion, Poe will address major problems impacting the health of the Bay and what is being done to address these problems. He notes that while restoration efforts for the Chesapeake Bay have been underway for more than 19 years, the results of these efforts have fallen far short of goals set in 1987 and the original target date for cleaning up the Bay by the year 2000 has come and gone. Poe added that leaders from the states that have rivers draining into the Chesapeake Bay watershed pledged to meet the original 2000 goals by 2010, and noted that as 2010 looms on the horizon, an immense amount of work and funding are still needed to meet these goals.

The series will continue March 9 with CSM Dean of Arts and Sciences Dr. Timothy Keating as he presents “Bob Dylan: Poetics of Love, Anger and Doom,” at the Leonardtown Campus, Building C, Room C201.

The April lecture will focus on “Healthcare in the U.S.: Play Now or Pay Later” with presenters Sandy Genrich, chair of the nursing and health technology department, and Bob Schaller, chair of business, economics and legal studies department. The lecture will be April 20, at the La Plata Campus, Learning Resources Center, LR102.

All presentations begin at 7 p.m. To learn more, contact Judy Schroeder, or 301-934-7627 or visit
