UPDATE – Storage facility fire remains under investigation

Waldorf, MD - A fire Saturday morning, Jan. 12 at Economy Storage in Waldorf resulted in $750,000, with most of the loss being the contents of 42 storage units that sustained damage, state officials reported.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office reported three firefighters were injured battling the two-alarm blaze off Leonardtown Road. The injuries to all three were minor. Two of the injured were transported to local hospitals and one was treated on the scene. 

“The fire, which was discovered by a patron of a nearby business, began in the interior of one of the storage units,” the fire marshal’s office reported. “Renters of the units are encouraged to contact Economy Storage directly at 301-843-5220 for the status of their unit contents. The fire remains under investigation.”

A total of 75 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. Portions of Leonardtown Road were closed for about two hours as firefighters brought the blaze under control.

Waldorf, MD - A fire at a storage facility on Leonardtown Road (Route 5) early Saturday morning, Jan. 12 resulted in damage to 40 storage units and contents, Charles County Volunteer Fire and Emergency Medical Services report.. Portions of Leonardtown Road were closed for over 2 hours while firefighters battled the blaze. The fire is under investigation. The fire was initially reported at approximately 6:30 a.m.

Charles County Commissioner Gilbert Bowling [D-District 1] reported on his Facebook page that three firefighters sustained injuries while battling the two-alarm blaze.

"Many thanks to all the volunteers , career and Prince George’s Fire and EMS for all you did this morning," Bowling stated. "Thank god for his mercy and I wish our 3 firefighters well as they recover."


UPDATE

Waldorf, MD - At 8:40 a.m. Charles County officials announced Leonardtown  Road had reopened.


Waldorf, MD - At 6:51 a.m. authorities in Charles County reported Leonardtown Road is closed in both directions from Pika Drive to Post Office Road due to a fire incident in the area. Please avoid the area and use caution.

Fire Department spokesman Bill Smith said the blaze has been contained. The incident is under investigation.
