WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer [MD-District 5] released the following statement Thursday, Jan. 3 on the first day of the 116th Congress:

"I am honored to once again serve the people of Maryland's Fifth Congressional District. In the 116th Congress, I will continue to work with my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to put the needs of Maryland families first. I remain focused on ensuring all Marylanders have access to economic opportunities that allow themselves and their families to get ahead. I will work to advance measures to bring down health care and prescription drug costs. And this session, the House of Representatives will take action to ensure more people can Make It In America, including investing in infrastructure and skills training and expanding entrepreneurship.

"It's unfortunate that we begin this new Congress during a partial government shutdown, which has real consequences for many of the 62,000 federal employees who live in the Fifth District. As Majority Leader, I am bringing legislation to the Floor today to reopen the government. Once these bills pass, I urge Senate Republicans to pass the legislation and President Trump to sign the bills into law so federal employees – including those in my district and across Maryland – are able to get back to work serving the American people and ensuring their safety and well-being."
