'Finish the Fight' a local teen's campaign for a cure

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. - Local teen Charlie Blocksidge and his team Finish the Fight are working towards a cure for blood cancers. Students from several Calvert County Schools have committed their time and talents to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Student of the Year Campaign (LLS-SOY), Maryland Chapter. Each year LLS-SOY gathers high school students from throughout Maryland to fundraise and raise awareness. This year’s campaign runs from January 19th through March 9th. Charlie and team, Finish the Fight, are the only group from Southern Maryland.

Someone is diagnosed with Leukemia or Lymphoma every 3 minutes. Every member of our community has been or knows someone who has been touched by these diseases. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is working on cutting edge research to find cures. Every dollar raised during the LLS-SOY Maryland campaign will stay at research facilities and hospitals within Maryland. By helping Team Finish the Fight, you will truly be making a difference to patients with blood cancer in your own community.

Charlie and his team have decided to use the winter months as the theme for their event. Finish the Fight is hosting a Winter Festival, Saturday, February 9th from 1-5 PM at Calvert High School.  Admission is $15 per person and can be purchased online or at the door and includes indoor synthetic ice skating, ice skate rental, games, crafts, and more. Comedy Magician Reggie Rice will also be performing, as well as local musicians. In honor of Blood Cancer survivors there will be a recognition ceremony at 2:00. To register to be a part of the ceremony, please visit our website:  There is also an exciting raffle. Raffle tickets will be on sale for a Nationals vs. Orioles game, Wednesday July 17th at 7:05 at Orioles Park at Camden Yards.
