Hundreds line up for grand opening of Harris Teeter

California, MD- It looked like a Black Friday sale as people lined up for the grand opening of the new Harris Teeter at St. Mary’s Marketplace in California on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

The popular grocery store chain held an official ribbon cutting followed by an invitation-only event called “Taste of Teeter.” Five thousand county residents received the invite to get a first look at the new store, along with an opportunity to sample what Harris Teeter has to offer.

Among those in attendance at the ribbon cutting were St. Mary’s County Commissioner President Randy Guy, along with commissioners Todd Morgan, Mike Hewitt, and Tom Jarboe.

Spirits were high among both customers and employees ahead of the grand opening. The store has provided more than 150 new jobs for residents of St. Mary’s County.

For the customers, they’re looking forward to new features that aren’t available anywhere else, like online shopping and the drive-thru pharmacy. They’re also delighted the store will be open 24 hours a day. “If you wake up in the middle of the night and you need something, it is right around the corner,” said Ann Meredith of California.

Meredith waited until the crowds died down before checking out the new store. “I had Harris Teeter in Virginia and I loved it.” She said they have a little bit of everything. “You name it, they have it here.”

Among the store’s offerings are a fresh breads bar, a fresh salad bar, an Asian bar, a wing bar, and countless other options from exotic cheeses to a wide variety of seafood, including handmade lobster rolls. “You could probably spend a few hours in here and walk out a very happy customer,” Meredith noted.

“Harris Teeter is extremely excited to join the California, Md. community with our brand new St. Mary’s Marketplace store,” said Danna Robinson, communication manager for Harris Teeter. “We look forward to meeting our new neighbors – many of whom may be new to the Harris Teeter family. We hope those new to our brand see firsthand what sets Harris Teeter apart – superior customer service; knowledgeable, friendly associates; beautiful, modern facilities; excellent quality and vast selection including extensive fresh meal offerings; as well as personalized promotions and offers.”

Harris Teeter also works closely with its neighbors to form a true community partnership through support of local nonprofit organizations including food banks and youth sports organizations, as schools, grades k-12.

Meredith said if you haven't shopped Harris Teeter before, you’re missing out. “It’s a beautiful store. The workers are excited and friendly and everyone is happy to be here.”

St. Mary’s Marketplace is located at the intersection of Three Notch Road and St. Andrew’s Church Road.
