On Thursday evening, Jan 7, Charles County Commissioner President Wayne Cooper was elevated to Vice President at the MACo (Maryland Association of Counties) annual winter meeting.

MACo has been in existence since the early 1950’s. The Association represents the interests of Maryland county government before the State government. MACo’s members are the elected officials of the 23 counties’ and Baltimore City. A 15-member board of directors and officers govern the Association, and the Legislative Committee, representing each of the jurisdictions, set legislative priorities for the Association.

Cooper was one of several officers sworn in by Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley at the Inaugural Banquet and Awards dinner at the Hyatt Regency Bay Hotel in Cambridge, Maryland.

Cooper said he’s anxious to get to started working on the tough issues that lie ahead for Maryland and its 23 counties. “We are faced with declining revenues and shrinking budgets, we must be fiscally responsible, and work with all the elected officials cross Maryland to be ready for the changes ahead” Cooper added.

MACo’S 2009 officers include: David R. Craig President (County Executive – Hartford County); Robert M. Hutcheson 2nd Vice President (Commissioner, Allegany County); Cathleen M. Vitale, Secretary (Chair-County Council/Anne Arundel County); and Kenneth Ulman, Treasurer (County Executive, Howard County).
