First Day of School

Dr. Michael J. Martirano
8/26/2009

To the Editor:

For most public school students, today is the first day of school for the 2009-2010 school year.  I want to take a moment to wish every child and every parent and guardian a very successful school year.  Our teachers and staff are ready to greet each child and immediately get down to the business of learning.

As the year begins, I encourage everyone in the community to do everything that we can to keep our children safe.  We must protect our children and we must keep them safe.  St. Mary’s County Public Schools has instituted many additional measures in our schools to keep children and staff safe.  Children must feel safe, secure, and nurtured in all of our schools.  This must occur first and foremost before the learning process can fully take place.

St. Mary’s County Public Schools is a high performing school system where we believe that ALL children can and will learn.  Our mission is to know the learner and to know the learning.  We expect excellence in both.  We accept no excuses and we educate ALL students with rigor, relevance, respect and positive relationships.

We are primed for another great year of learning as we chart a course to excellence for all students.  We are fully prepared to do the next right thing on behalf of EACH one of our children.  Welcome back to school.  Here’s to continued academic success for ALL of our students.
