Bob Schaller5/5/2009
Welcome May! Warmer weather, green grass, growth and color (and pollen) everywhere, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and a whole lot in between. The Kentucky Derby, Preakness, the Indianapolis 500 all mark the month. In May we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage, Mental Health Awareness, National Military Appreciation, among other important causes.
May also brings focus to small business, where the bulk of the economy happens. On May 4, the St. Mary’s County Board of County Commissioners officially proclaimed the month of May as Small Business Month to recognize the numerous small businesses that form the heart of the St. Mary’s County business community. Small Business Month provides an opportunity to increase public awareness about the major business opportunities for economic development, innovation, growth, and expansion in our communities.
Based on the most recent U.S. Census data, of the approximate 1900 total business establishments in the County, fully half have fewer than 5 employees, 70% have fewer than 10 employees, and 98% have less than 100 employees. The economy runs on small business.
In terms of small business leadership, congratulations to three St. Mary’s County businesses that will be recognized at the 2009 Annual Leading Edge Awards – a celebration of corporate success in Southern Maryland – on June 17. St. Mary’s County winners include: Compass Systems, Inc.; St. Mary’s Hospital; and Wyle. At the state level, Austin “Joe” Slater, President & CEO of SMECO, took the reigns as Maryland Chamber of Commerce Chairman. What a great showing for County leadership.
Several events are scheduled to celebrate Small Business Month. One to note is the Chamber of Commerce’s 2009 Business Showcase on Wednesday May 13, 2009 at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center. The event is free and open to the public, and will feature over 50 local business exhibits, opportunities to network with fellow business members, and free seminars available to advance your business. The Chamber is hosting other events and activities in May. To learn more see www.smcchamber.com
Thank you, small businesses for turning the wheels of our great market economy.
