Habitat Home Inspires Neighborhood Clean-Up
8/4/2008
Neighbors in the Southampton neighborhood of Lexington Park have been inspired to tidy up their community.
Volunteers from the Patuxent Habitat for Humanity, with support from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, recently built a home for the Holt Family in the Southampton neighborhood. Since the house was built, homeowners have been stirred to fix up their homes and surrounding property.
Community member D.J. Brown was so inspired by the Holt’s home, he decided to spearhead a community clean-up. Mr. Brown has been cleaning curbs and tidying up the property of the old USO building.
The culmination of the neighborhood cleanup will take place on National Night Out on August 5. Neighbors will join together to clean up trash and celebrate National Night Out with a block party. D.J. Brown will be providing music for the event.
“National Night Out is the perfect opportunity for neighbors to come together and restore pride in our neighborhood,” said Brown.
Patuxent Habitat for Humanity is hoping to build more houses in the Southampton community. “If one home has this kind of effect on the neighborhood, imagine what a few more could do?” said Patuxent Habitat President Gary Williams.
Patuxent Habitat for Humanity is seeking volunteers, sponsors and families needing homes. For more information, log on to www.patuxenthabitat.org or call (301) 863-6227.
