Huntingtown, MD - 4/1/2013

UPDATE...the Calvert County Sheriff's Office has identified the man shot to death as Kevin Wayne Chapman, 38 of Lusby. Police have arrested the suspect who fled the scene. That suspect was identified as April Lynn Stewart, 39 of Lusby. More information to follow.

Calvert County Sheriff Mike Evans [R] said a retired Washington, DC police officer who shot and killed an alleged intruder outside his Huntingtown home March 31 “feared for his life.” The incident occurred at a residence on Harlequin Court at approximately 10:30 p.m., police reported.

According to a sheriff’s office press release, the Calvert County Emergency Operations Center received a call advising someone had been shot at the home. A sheriff’s office supervisor responding to the scene “found that one person was on the ground next to the driveway of this residence. This person was deceased.”

The initial probe of the Calvert Investigative Team (CIT) revealed the homeowner was in the residence when he heard loud banging at his door. The resident retrieved a handgun, went to the front door, opened it and saw two individuals standing at the door.

“One of these persons brandished a weapon and both persons made aggressive movements and statements” toward the resident, the press release stated. “The victim/homeowner was in fear for his life and subsequently fired at the suspects. One suspect was struck from the shots and succumbed to his wounds. The second suspect fled in a vehicle.”

Evans stated that police are not divulging the name of the deceased, vehicle information, information on the second suspect and the name of the victim at this time. The sheriff stated the CIT is still trying to determine if the homeowner was specifically targeted by the intruders or the incident was a random act.

Because the victim feared for his life, Evans said the shooting was in self-defense.
