UPDATE: Local Baseball Team Travels to Cooperstown, NY
The 12U Hughesville Orioles Select Baseball team will travel to Cooperstown, N.Y. June 24 through July 1 to play in the largest youth baseball invitational tournament in the nation. Currently ranked #3 in the State of Maryland, the 12U Orioles will arrive in the town of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, home to the greatest stars of the game, where 100 teams from across the country will participate in the 5-day tournament.
The Cooperstown Dreams Park is the premier baseball competition in the country for 12 year-old players attended by over 1,000 teams every summer since the park opened in 1996. The 22 baseball fields are cut from the same pastures that gave life to the magical myth of Abner Doubleday, the legendary founder of the game of baseball. Teams travel far and wide to play on these sacred fields.
The once in a lifetime experience includes a stunning opening day ceremony complete with a home run derby, and speed and agility competitions like Road Runner, Golden Arm and Around the Horn. Many of the games are streamed via webcast and players also enjoy trips to the Baseball Hall of Fame and can watch baseball games at the legendary Doubleday Field, where the first baseball game was played one afternoon in 1839.
The 12U Orioles team is comprised of coaches and players from Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties. The core team has been together since 2008 and has been fundraising for two years to pay for the trip.
Following the 5-day tournament, each player and coach from the Hughesville Orioles team will be granted membership into a very distinguished baseball club as they are awarded the coveted American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame ring, and will be inducted into the prestigious American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame where they will be enshrined. This ceremony is said to be the highlight of the trip leaving every player with a great sense of pride, dignity and accomplishment.
In the town of Cooperstown, where baseball began, the 12U Hughesville Orioles will make their place in history and walk the same streets as their baseball heroes who walked before them. There is no other invitational tournament quite like Cooperstown Dreams Park, with its majestic baseball atmosphere where baseball present meets the traditional values of baseball past.
