Helping Local VeteransST. MARY'S COUNTY - 5/28/2009
Southern Maryland is no stranger to war veterans. In fact, as of 2008, more than 51,000 veterans live in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties, comprising 11 percent of Maryland’s veteran population. In St. Mary’s County, only 860 veterans use the Veterans Integrated Service Network – National Capitol Region facilities out of the county’s more than 12,000 veterans, a usage rate of 7 percent. The VA Medical Center in Washington, D.C., is available to veterans in Southern Maryland, and it oversees outpatient care at the Charlotte Hall Community-based Outpatient Clinic.
For all these local veterans, St. Mary’s Hospital is sponsoring an afternoon of conversation and ice cream sundaes on Aug. 9 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Linda’s Café in Lexington Park. The southern regional resource coordinator with the Maryland’s Commitment to Veterans initiative will be present to answer questions about veterans’ benefits and services. This is your chance to meet, greet and connect with fellow Southern Maryland veterans and their families. Call Health Connections at (301) 475-6019 if you plan to attend. |
