Maryland Senator Roy Dyson won his reelection bid by beating out Tommy McKay, who will become former president of the St. Mary’s Commissioners in early December.
The Bay Net caught up with Dyson and McKay on Friday to hear what they thought about the election and the future for the county and state.
Dyson says the Democrats in power in Maryland under Governor-elect Martin O’Malley will finally get things done, especially in the area of transportation.
McKay said if he’s learned one thing during this election, it is that negative and attack advertising works. And they work especially well when you have a tabloid newspaper working for you, he said.
See the three videos included here for more of McKay and Dyson’s comments on the election, and their future plans, which for McKay include working on his family’s new newspaper business, The County Times.
McKay thanks voters and campaign volunteers, and talks about his future plans

Tommy, why can't you just bow out gracefully like all the other non-winning candidates? Why must you disgrace your family's name and all of Southern Maryland? You lost - end of story.
It would have been nice if he lamented providing false information to voters about his education, and lamented his blatant violations of County laws on political campaign signs.
Or maybe he could have lamented accepting so much money from developers, which always sends up a red flag with voters.
On Thanksgiving, please remember to be thankful for all the sophisticated and enlightened auslanders that help keep us stupid southern Maryland voters in our place. We just can't all come from wherever that enlightened far away land they come from might be, so it's so very thoughtful of them to come to this lil' ole hick town of ours and try to straighten us out. If I could have been just a little more sophisticated, perhaps I would have realized that McKay was more worthy of my vote. Oh well.
Anyone that believes 10% of what that rag newspaper puts out is a bigger fool than McKay... Not once did they disclose their close ties to Dyson and the Democratic party...yet hammered away at Tommy McKay like it was fair and impartial journalism.
This bad reporting, and the sore winner attitude by Dyson supporters is really sad. I hope you have the same passion when Roy continues his tradition as the most liberal Senator in Maryland over the next 4 years.
Hold onto your wallets!
Tommy McKay has had 4 very productive and fiscally responsible years for the citizens of St. Mary's County for which we are grateful.
Bad reporting can't change the fact that he presided over a very efficient government and transition. When this board took over the outlook was gloomy. Last year they paid down $14 million in debt which is reducing our need to borrow money. Government was streamlined from ump-teen department heads to half that many.
McKay's campaign was not successful but his 4 years in county government was a huge success.
Of what bad reporting are you talking about? The story can hardly be called bad reporting, both candidates were simply given a platform to speak. If anything the story comes off pro-McKay (but that's only because Dyson didn't say as much)
Most of us in this county remember when your "great leader" stole a million dollars from HIS OWN FAMILY and skipped town to live it up in Vegas! I find it hard to believe that ANYONE would want to vote for a man that steals, let alone from his own family!!
AMAZING! Now McKay wants us to think that it was Dyson and the Democrats that did all the negative advertising.
There is probably not a registered voter in the State of Maryland who won't tell you how fed up they were with all the negative campaigning by both parties, and in particular " The Republican and Democratic State Central Committees".
What about the ad on the radio where Tommy says "my friends after 30 years in public office my opponent just doesn't get it"
NO, Tommy YOU DID'T GET IT!! The majority rules, you didn't win! It wasn't negative campaigning on the part of Dyson or the Democrats, it wasn't St. Mary's Today and Ken Rossignol, it was YOU, your lack of honesty, your self-rightous attitude, above the law disposition, shall I go on, these are the things that cost you the election.
Can't wait to hear what your son has to say now. Four years ago he was telling anybody who would listen that his dad is President of the County Commissioners and in 4 years he is going to be State Senator and 4 years after that "we are going to move into the Governor's mansion" heard it with my own ears!!!
Hey look on the positive side of things, Fritz is still States Attorney, your son can breath a sligh of relief.
I agree with you ,lets see what Little Mr Mckay has to run off at the mouth about now, maybe he can tell us how he made the money better yet how it is he got away with it but the guy he bought dope from got charged with it???? Lets see how much he can ge away with now, more then my child or yours i am sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have but 1 question " Does Tommy McKay get tired of "LYING,BLAMING,CHEATING,SNEAKING or COVERING UP" I have read so many different LIES that have come out of his mouth. He is not someone I would trust to water my dog let alone run the county I live in. No wonder his son acts and talks like he does he has his dad to LIE & COVER UP for him, now might be a good time for Little McKay to come back down to the real world the one Daddy doesn't run..............
For all of you McKay supporters, why don't you just look deep inside and figure out he's a big fat liar and attacks county citizens because they are democratic. He attacks the Blazer Family because they support Julie Randall...
Maybe McKay just needs to grow up and be mature about electons and not take it out on someone because of their friends.
