The elections are just around the corner, and some candidates have become creative with their campaigns.

Joe St. Clair, who is a candidate for County Commissioner in St. Mary’s, had his Hummer “wrapped” with a picture of St. Clement’s Island, captured at the peak of the Black-Eyed Susan’s blooms.

At a recent after-hours for St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce, those vying for various county offices were out in force at St. Clement’s Island. During the busy campaign schedule, some of the candidates found time to relax a little and laugh with each other.

St. Clair pulled up his vibrant Hummer, which announces his bid for County Commissioner, and also proudly states: “St. Mary’s County – Mother County of Maryland,” to offer a close-up view of the art, against the background of the original scene that inspired it.

“Someone told me they could see the bees on the Black-Eyed Susans,” joked St. Clair.

Joe St. Clair is one of the leaders of the St. Mary’s Hurricane Relief Fund, and last year made several trips to the devastated region of D’Iberville, Mississippi (a town of comparable size to St. Mary’s County). The Hurricane Relief group collected school supplies for the children of D’Iberville, and delivered them personally. After seeing the whole community displaced and without clothing and other essentials, there were many more trips from Lexington Park to the Mississippi town, including December’s “Operation Mississippi Christmas.”

The Hummer might not be the most fuel-efficient car, as St. Clair joked, but with a new hurricane season just around the corner, he says he could tow a whole container of books, clothes, or medical supplies himself this year.
