Do you need to go someplace – the doctor’s, dentist, shopping, the hairdressers? Do you need a ride? If the answer to both questions is yes, you’re in luck.

Administration and the Board of Commissioners for St. Mary’s County, offers transport for riders 60 years of age or older through the Senior Rides Program.

“It’s a great program, especially in our geography,” said Deputy Director St.Mary’s County Department of Aging Jennie Page, explaining the county has only a few main highways with a lot of out-of-the way areas lacking easy access to transportation. “We are not a substitute for public transportation, she said, but, for some, the Senior Rides program is a huge help.

“Most of the people I drive never get into a vehicle unless someone like me takes them someplace," said Bob Woody, a volunteer driver who provides transport approximately four times a month. Woody is one of seven drivers supporting the program.

Drivers provide their own vehicles but receive mileage reimbursement. They must complete an application, sign a volunteer driver release waiver, participate in an informal interview and pass a criminal background check as well as an annual driving-record check by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.

The county provides drivers with supplemental accident insurance; CPR, first aid and driver-safety training. They are also given driving directions and pertinent information prior to a trip.

Drivers are so important to the program, Page said. "And, we need more.” Some drivers are on call; others have specific days for driving. “We do whatever we can to accommodate drivers’ schedules, she explained, adding they are absolutely vital to the program. Transportation can only be provided if a driver is available. “With more drivers, Page said, “more rides can be provided.”

Individuals interested in becoming a Senior Rides driver should call Denise Charlot at (301) 475-4200, ext. 1066. Drivers must be 21 years of age or older, own a personal vehicle and have automobile insurance with personal liability of at least $100,000.

Providing rides is “an area where people need help,” Woody said. He and his wife are equal partners when it comes to providing a car and driver for the Seniors Ride program. “It is a great thing to do together,” he said, explaining he would recommend driving to any one looking to volunteer, to give back to the community.

Fees for rides are charged on a radius basis based on the rider’s pick up address. Fees include: $6 within a 15 mile radius, $10 outside a 15 mile radius, $15 outside a 30 mile radius and $30 to Annapolis and the Baltimore/ Washington areas. Long distance trips are for medical trips only.

Individuals interested in receiving transport through Senior Rides must be 60 years of age or older, be a St. Mary’s County resident, have a moderate income, be able to walk with a cane or walker and lack access to reasonable, affordable transportation options.

Riders must complete an application, by phone, in-person or by mail, to participate in the program. Rides are limited to four a month and requests for transportation within the county must be made three days in advance. Out-of-county rides must be requested five days in advance.
