Commissioner Samuel N. Graves, Jr., talks with Pat and
Sharon Reilly, owners of Deputy Dogs, after presenting a
proclamation recognizing July as National Hot Dog Month.

In celebration of National Hot Dog Month, former Charles County Deputy Pat (Deputy Dogs) Reilly and his wife, Sharon, recently gave back to the community by providing free hots dogs and drinks to all passers-by at the La Plata Town Hall parking lot.

“We just wanted to say thanks to all the people who support us during the year, and to celebrate one of America's favorite foods,” said Reilly.

Charles County Commissioner Samuel N. Graves Jr. presented the duo with a proclamation in support of the month-long celebration, and for their continued community service efforts. “If you haven't had a hot dog from Deputy Dogs, then you haven't had a hot dog,” said Graves.

According to Tonya Allen, Public Affairs Manager for the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (based in Washington, D.C.), hot dogs are the fans' favorite at stadiums around the nation. Peanuts ranked second, followed by pizza, cotton candy, and finally, cracker jacks. “Americans eat over 7 billion hot dogs alone during baseball season,” she added.

Legend has it that the great Babe Ruth once ate 12 hot dogs and drank eight bottles of sodas between games of a doubleheader. He also gorged himself on 18 hot dogs before blacking out on a train ride in 1925. A week later he was admitted to St. Vincent's Hospital in New York undergoing surgery for an intestinal abscess. Of course, you can't blame it on the hot dogs because Babe was known to drink a quart mixture of bourbon whiskey and ginger ale at breakfast.
