A citizen reported seeing the rear of St. Georges Church on fire. Firefighters arrived in minutes to the rain-drenched scene to find flames coming from the roof of the church.

By 9:50 p.m. fire officials on the scene determined the fire was coming from a gas line, and by 10 p.m. the flames were knocked down.

Apparently lighting struck the building near a gas line, causing the blaze which left extensive damage.

The Maryland State Fire Marshals Office has not released details on this fire. See slideshow below for images from the scene.
