Hoyer Statement on Weather Damage in Southern Maryland
WASHINGTON - 6/6/2008
|
Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement regarding the severe weather that resulted in major power outages and caused damage in Southern Maryland and throughout the region Wednesday: “The storm system that moved through our region Wednesday brought heavy winds and torrential rain that caused thousands to lose their power and resulted in property damage to residences and businesses. Once again, our local emergency personnel must be praised for their efficient response, upon which we have come to rely heavily during this season of unusually violent weather. “Members of my staff have visited the affected areas and continue to be in contact with local officials and responders. I understand that injuries were minimal, but that a construction worker in Calvert County remains in serious condition. Our thoughts and prayers remain with him and his family, as well as with all those who have been injured or displaced due to the storm. “The frequency of dangerous weather this season reminds us of the importance of heeding weather warnings and taking necessary precautions to protect ourselves and our families. In the event that power outages cut off communications to television and other sources of information - as was the case yesterday - it is advisable to include a battery-powered radio in your home or business emergency kit.” |
