Police Out in Force for Memorial Day Weekend

ST. MARY'S COUNTY - 5/25/2008

Throughout the Memorial Day weekend law enforcement officers will be on the lookout for impaired drivers, seat belt violations, and speeders.  Operations will be conducted throughout St. Mary’s County cover the north, south and central county locations.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police at Point Lookout State Park will be conducting radar and seat belt checkpoints.  Additionally, officers will be checking for fishing licenses for anyone fishing on the premises.  Point Lookout State Park is a day time park, with the exception of licensed fishing and overnight camping.  Fishing licenses are very inexpensive, but to be caught without a license when fishing can cost up to $1000.  Speed and impairment often go hand in hand in motor vehicle incidents at the park and visitors would be well advised to both drive the speed limit and not to get into the vehicle if they have been drinking or using other drugs.

St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a Checkpoint StrikeForce Sobriety Checkpoint on Sunday evening.  Locations for sobriety checkpoints follow impaired driving crash and arrect data.  Memorial Day serves as one of the opening summer season events with many cookouts, picnic and outings.  These often involve the use of alcohol.  Impaired drivers will be pulled to testing site at the checkpoint and those determined to be impaired will get a free ride – to jail.

Maryland State Police will be conducting speed and radar operations in locations throughout St. Mary’s County in locations with high incidents of motor vehicles crashes where speed was a primary or secondary factor in the crash.  There will be no warnings issued by law enforcement.  The only warning is the posted speed limit sign.  The sign is not a suggested speed.  It is, as it states, the speed LIMIT.
