Beginning on June 13, St. Mary’s College of Maryland launches its much anticipated River Concert Series. The theme for this first in the series “Feeling my Inner Celt” will feature a number of Celtic inspired pieces and the River Series Celtic Dancers.

As has been the case for the past 10 seasons, the River Concert Series will be directed by Maestro, recording artist, SMCM professor and trumpeter extraordinaire, Jeffrey Silberschlag.

In a one-on-one interview with The Bay Net, Silberschlag stated that from now through the summer, he is one very busy musician and conductor. In addition to the River Concert Series, he also runs the Alba Spring Festival held in Northern Italy, which coincides with the local series of concerts.

“I have been to Europe a lot over the past few weeks and I’m on the phone or on Skype at least twice a day putting both concert series together,” Silberschlag said. “I don’t get to sleep much.”

The affable musician has quite a reputation around the world. Silberschlag has performed as a conductor and trumpet soloist throughout Europe, the United States, Russia, China, Japan, and Israel. On top of everything else he has going on, Silberschlag is music director and conductor of the Chesapeake Orchestra.

Silberschlag is also an acclaimed recording artist. He recently recorded William Thomas McKinley’s “And the Presidents Said” with narrator Ben Bradlee and the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studio.

When asked how he can possibly get everything done having to work on two continents, Silberschlag stated, “I couldn’t do it without the help of everyone.”

He went on to list the people he works with to help bring the River Concert Series together. Torre Meringolo, VP Development, Larry Vote, Provost, Jane Margaret O’Brien, President of SMCM and Barbara Bershon, Executive Director of the River Concert Series here and Giuseppe Nova, Co-Director of the Italian Music Festival Series.

“It’s a total team effort on both sides of the Atlantic.”

The June 13 concert will kick off events held each week at the college ending in late July. For more information, visit www.riverconcertseries.com.
