Reader's Letter: Bike Lanes on Rt 235 Unusable

During the past two weeks I have been riding my bike to work and back and I see a few other bikers doing the same.

All the other bike riders I see though are on the sidewalk, and now I know why, the bike lanes are cluttered with trash, broken glass and shards of metal.

I have already had one flat tire in just over two weeks of riding.

Just wondering if we have a street sweeper and if so how do we get this road cleaned?

Are you nuts?
Drivers run into each other on 235 daily... That's why there is debris all over the bike lane. Cars are big and steel. Drivers are blind and careless. Why do you want to be in their way?

Drive your car to work man! Biking on 235 is not only dangerous, but probably insane!

Do you have a death wish? The bike lane is wide enough just for a bike. No room for a rider on it.I wouldn't take the chance on getting whacked in the head with a side view mirror either. As for street sweepers, I've seen one, one time in a private parking lot. SMC is not a safe place to ride one's bike for a variety of reasons.

Wishful thinking on the street sweepers Tom. Our county spends to much money on portable stages, developments, zoning and spending money to photograph peoples houses.

Sad County
How sad it is that in a county that TRIES to pride itself on its "continued" country view that it is "unsafe" to ride a bike through it! Even more sad is I wouldn't be as worried about the glass attacking my bike as I would an angry Great Mills Road Resident hot on my tail. I want to cheer "Ride on Tom" but the truth is its safer to ride a bike in NYC then it is down here. I hope the areas avid riders get together on a solution. Just let me know where to sign!

I will just assume here that Tom works on the base..If he does not, then never mind this comment.
The base has awesome bikeriding paths to ride on and it's kept up pretty well. Maybe you can use them? Just a thought..:)
Bikeriding on 235 is suicide...geez, just the fumes you would inhale..

What a lame comment. DON'T stop riding bikes on the road. It is a free country and if more people road bikes there would be less people having a hard time getting through the doorway at Cici's pizza! RIDE ON!

Maybe if the fresh air would quit getting to you, you'd know it was rode and not road. As the old saying goes, one stupid comment breeds another.

At your own risk
Just ride your bike at your own risk. Personally, I think St. Mary's County is too ghetto to ride a bike. But it's your choice.
