Leonardtown HS Instructor Jailed for Child Sex Abuse

On Wednesday, St. Mary’s County BCI detectives arrested a Leonardtown High School Drum Line Coach and charged him with Child Sexual Abuse for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a student.

Scott Thomas Strandberg Jr., a 24 of Lexington Park, was arrested after detectives learned of the coach having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student.

Incidents occurred at Strandberg’s home and on a school bus, between September and November 2007.
Strandberg was incarcerated at the St. Mary’s County Detention Center.

We were there...
Remember when you were 16? Dating an older man was 'cool'.
But HE should have known better. It is the obligation of the older generation to lead the younger generation on the right path.
I want to know if this was an accident 'just waiting to happen', if this guy was just observing and waiting for the right girl and time. Because there ARE warning signs of perverts like this.

Indeed there are warning signs and a LOT of girls got the exact same signs as I did from this guy where he worked (which I won't say, I don't want to give that place a bad rep). I will say that he apparently didn't want me on L-Town's indoor drum line because I'm "good" at drumming. Nasty nasty nasty >:(

You dont know!
I know Scott, and he's a nice guy. Yes he made a mistake, but let's not think that 16-year-old girls are all innocent too.

I have a 17-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son, and believe me some things they have told me that go-on in high school, with both girls and guys, this age and younger is not at all age appropriate!

I have had girls younger than 16 email and text naked pictures to my son and some of the emails and with some of the text messages I have read not one word can be printed!

And this is actually the norm, not the exception.

I understand Scott is of age, and he should have known better, but now a days 16-year-old girls are more mature and know much more about sex than when I was that age, and it wasn't too long ago!

I am not condoning in any means what happened, but I myself was 16 when I had a boyfriend that was 21, and I would have never blamed anyone for my actions. I was a willing participant, even if I was only 16. I knew what I was doing.

And if she had relations with Scott 3 times or so that she is alleging, well I'm sorry to say I think she knew too. Once may be a mistake anything more....I beg to differ.

He's a really caring and sweet guy, I'm sick to death that this happened, but before you can make any harsh judgments on him, think about things you may have done in your past that you aren't too proud of. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!

I too have know Scott personally for years. I don't know the whole story but I do know that he would not hurt or put anyone in harms way. People should not assume or make generalized remarks without personally knowing him.
And I agree at 16 you know wrong and right she made a decision the same that he did. But he was the older person in the situation and should have known better. I wish him the best of luck in getting through this.

I know Scott, also. And I beg to differ about him being a nice guy. But that's neither here nor there.

In my opinion, the major problem with his actions, isn't so much that he had a sexual relationship with a 16 year old (yes, we were all there, where dating the older guy was cool), but that the 16 year old was ONE OF HIS STUDENTS!

As a 'role model' figure for students, he shouldn't be sleeping with them! He should have known that it was inappropriate. This is just one...how many others are there really? We may never know...

The 16 year old should have known it was wrong to have a sexual relationship with her coach, but he, being the older and 'more mature' should have been the one enforcing it. He was wrong, plain and simple.

I don't know either of the parties; however I do know I dated a 22 year old when I was 16. And yes, my mom and dad knew AND loved him. In fact all of my friends were 18 and older.

Sounds to me like both parties were willing. What was inappropriate? The fact that he was her coach?

Last I heard a CHILD could drop out of school at 16, If they're old enough to decide they can drop out of school then I sure as hell would think they can make a decision on who they date. a relationship takes more than one person... I assume mommy and daddy found out and decided to press charges... good- maybe mommy and daddy should have been more aware of the type of daughter they have before pointing fingers.

Now this man's life is ruined because he was in a RELATIONSHIP with a willing party.

I don't think the age thing is inappropriate (to each his own), but I do think that him sleeping with his student was. And I would hardly consider three encounters with one another a relationship.

Regardless of age I don't think he should be permitted to sleep with anyone! His track record with the way he treats woman is disgusting.

I agree that a teacher shouldn't have a relationship with a student. I get that argument.

Having 3 encounters with this girl tells me that she saw him willingly. Perhaps they talked on the phone, emailed, and hung out other times as well. Just because they only had 3 encounters doesn't mean they weren't talking more than that. So sure they absolutely could have been considered to be "in a relationship"

The fact that SHE turned him in actually makes me assume he "broke up with her" so to get him back she turned him in. Seems a little childish but when you are in love with someone and they break it off with you seems only fair that an immediate reaction would be to hurt them back.

I don't know anything about this other than what I have read and my take on the whole thing is both were willing. I can't imagine this girl was being abused or bribed or anything else. I think perhaps she didn't get what she wanted and she got mad threw a fit and had him arrested. I hope that's not the case but it sure sounds that way.

For the record I'm not saying he did nothing wrong. He did he was someone she was supposed to count on as a TEACHER and COACH, but he shouldn't be treated like a sex offender who likes little girls either.

He will now have to live with the title "sex offender" for the rest of his life. Pretty sad considering she was clearly all for doing the act AT LEAST 3 times.

We can each sit here and speculate all we want, but it won't get us anywhere. I guess we just sit and wait for the full story after the trial, which I plan to be at if it is open to the public.

Give him a break!
Scott is one of the nicest people you will ever meet, always smiling and sweet, my husband plays softball with him on a team, and to watch him interact with everyone( girls and guys alike), you would see hes not the monster some people are making him out to be. Cut him some slack, it was an in indiscretion he's human, we all make mistakes.

As a parent all I can say is I hope he gets everything he deserves. What goes around comes around and now its time for scott to pay the price. His parents must be really proud of him this time. I think hes a low life and he only "dates" 16 yr olds because all the girls his age are toooo smart to date him He has some real problems that hopefully he can straighten out in JAIL.

The best to you LOSER!!! can't wait to hear how long he gets.

Yeah, I know this is old news but I just found this and had to put my two cents in. I know Scott too. I used to work with him. Well, sadly you could see this mans deperation a mile away. Every girl that walked in the door, he would have his eyes on looking them up and down. He would try to get with every female co-worker that he had. He thinks he's something else. And as a female, if you reject him like I did. He turns his back on you and trys to get you fired somehow. His wife was a real piece of work too. She helped make him the way he is. She got pregnant by two other guys while she was married to him. He even wanted the boss man's gumby-looking wife. What a loser....well, both of them...

I agree with the fact that he is a desperate piece of crap and every girl that he sees he tries to sleep with. But his EX wife did not get pregnant by two different guys while she was married to him. She was pregnant with her first child before she even met him. And when she got pregnant with her second she was already seperated from him because of his disgusting attraction for his younger girl students. Because if you think this is the first girl you're all sadly mistaken. I know for a fact there has been at least one other girl and more than likely there has been more. She left him when she found out who and what he was. So don't talk about things you don't know.
