At 6:52 p.m. Feb. 2, a 2005 Volkswagen Golf, operated by Shauna Shaw, 26 of Mechanicsville was traveling northbound on Point Lookout Road in the area of the Mechanicsville Burch Mart when a pedestrian, identified as Donald Garfield Holton, 61 of Hughesville walked out in front of her vehicle.

After the Shaw's vehicle struck the pedestrian who was illegally in the roadway she immediately stopped her vehicle.

A road Patrol unit with the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office who happened to be patrolling in the area pulled up on the scene just after the collision occurred.

Holton died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.

The Sheriff's Office Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

It was determined that Mr. Holton was dressed in all dark clothing and was illegally in the roadway when he was struck by the vehicle.

Speed and alcohol are not considered to be contributing factors for the operator of the vehicle, however for Holton it will have to be determined based on the outcome of a post mortem examination conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.

The Sheriff's Office Reconstruction Team is still continuing the investigation and if there is any one out there that may have witnessed the collision and not spoke with a Deputy on the scene please contact Deputy Timothy Reese @ (301)475-4040.
