Deputy State Fire Marshal John Nelson has been named the “Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year” for the Southern regional office.

Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal Duane K. Svites selected Nelson for the award for the Southern regional office, which serves Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties.

Nelson was cited for his achievement in obtaining an exceptional closure rate in arson investigation along with outstanding performance in enforcing the State Fire Prevention Code.

State Fire Marshal William E. Barnard announced the selection during a ceremony at the Maryland State Firemen’s Association annual convention in Ocean City on Tuesday.

Commenting on his service, Barnard said, “John’s performance during 2006 is an outstanding example of the dedication shown by the employees of our agency.”
