Shortly after noon on Monday March 26, local police discovered the vehicle of a suspect wanted for questioning and stolen firearms, parked around the back of Cerro Grande restaurant in Leonardtown Square.

That man was identified on Tuesday as Kevin Paul O'Connor, age 42.

O'Connor was wanted by police in connection with the burglary of a home on Drayden Road, in Valley Lee, and the theft of tools and shotguns from a workshop on the same road.

County police and state troopers arrived on the scene Monday to secure the area.  Yellow police tape was placed around most of the square from St. Mary’s Hospice to Café des Artistes.

After the vehicle was discovered, police learned their suspect had been renting an apartment above the restaurant, Cerro Grande.

Nicolas, the manager of Cerro Grande, said he had never seen the man before.  “Police asked me to close the doors and to not let anyone go in and out,” Nicolas told the Bay Net.

The suspect surrendered shortly before 1pm
Police told the public to keep their distance, away from Cerro Grande restaurant, above which the suspect barricaded himself. “We didn’t want him shooting across the street,” Sergeant Andrew Cusick told The Bay Net.

O'Connor surrendered shortly before 1 pm and was taken away for questioning, according to Cusick.

“They’re currently obtaining a search warrant,” Cusick told the Bay Net. After the arrest Cusick said the Bureau of Criminal Investigations would be arriving shortly to investigate the scene.  “Until then our officers will keep the scene secure,” he said Monday.

By 1 pm on Monday Leonardtown Square was secure once again and stores were able to reopen.

On Tuesday the Bureau of Criminal Investigations announced they have charged O'Conner with first degree burglary and two counts of theft over $500.
