A man who abandoned his vehicle at the top of the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge and was seen leaping off the span by several other motorists has not been located, police said. According to Lt. Steve Jones of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred Tuesday, April 9 at approximately 6:30 p.m.
Investigators reported at least four people saw the unidentified, middle-age white male stop his Toyota Camry in the southbound lane at the top of the bridge. Jones said the man was then seen “throwing himself over the northbound Jersey wall barrier of the bridge.
For several hours, vessels from the Maryland Natural Resources Police, U.S. Coast Guard, Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and several volunteer fire and rescue companies from the three Southern Maryland Counties searched the Patuxent River but were unable to locate the man. The Maryland State Police helicopter Trooper 7 did an aerial search of the area with negative results. The search was suspended at dusk.
