Senator attending opening of Bel Alton Region Dental Center
On Monday, March 11, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) will visit Charles County to attend the opening of the Bel Alton Dental Center (9501 Crain Highway, Bel Alton) at 9:30 a.m. At 11 a.m. Senator Cardin will host a roundtable discussion for the Southern Maryland business community to discuss the impact of sequestration at the Waldorf West Library (10405 O'Donnell Place, Waldorf).
Commissioner President Candice Quinn Kelly said, "It is an honor to have Senator Cardin visit Charles County and to listen to the business owners that may be affected by this sequestration. We look forward to welcoming him."
Many businesses in Maryland depend on the federal government for contracts. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has estimated that sequestration could result in cuts to procurement budgets of more than $49 billion over 10 years. Such cuts could result in a loss of more than 282,400 jobs nationwide among suppliers and vendors who depend on DoD primary contractors.
On March 1, sequestration - automatic, across-the-board spending cuts - began to take effect. Unless Congress acts, sequestration requires $42.7 billion in cuts to defense programs and another $42.7 billion in cuts to non-defense programs over the next year. Cuts of this magnitude will have a profound effect on Maryland and our entire nation.
