Santa Visits the Calvert County Commissioners
Prince Frederick, MD - 12/22/2012
By Marty Madden
Santa Claus came a calling on the Calvert County Commissioners during the board’s last meeting of 2012.
The five commissioners were invited to sit on Santa’s knee and tell him want they were wishing for this Christmas.
Commissioner Susan Shaw [R] requested “peace among Democrats and Republicans and healing for those who are sick.”
“A little girl for all the little boys,” was the wish of Commissioner Evan K. Slaughenhoupt Jr. [R].
Commissioners’ President Pat Nutter [R] asked for peace on Earth.
Commissioner Steven R. Weems [R] asked Department of Community Planning and Building Director Charles Johnston to sit on Santa’s knee in his stead. Johnston asked that everyone “get along” in the New Year.
Commissioner Gerald W. “Jerry” Clark [R] asked County Administrator Terry Shannon to sit in for him. Shannon, with the assistance of executive administrative aide Lisa M. Viverette, did so. Shannon and Viverette both requested “peace, love and understanding.”
Before he left, Santa Claus handed out candy canes to the government officials and even found it in his heart to dole out the holiday treat to members of the press (thanks, Santa).
While Claus is seen as a non-political figure in America, it should be noted that in Maryland Santa received 625 write-in votes for President of the United States in the November General Election.
