Man Breaks Into Home, Shot, Then Arrested

On November 20, 2011 at 4:58 A.M. police units responded to a private residence in St. Inigoes, Maryland for the report of a burglary to an occupied dwelling and a subject being shot.Upon patrol units arrival it was determined the suspect had broke into the victims home, had been shot and had fled into the nearby woods.

Detectives from the St. Mary’s County Bureau of Criminal Investigations responded and assumed the investigation.An investigation revealed the suspect, George B. Williams, age 19, of St. Mary’s City, entered the victim’s residence through a front window while the homeowner was asleep.The homeowner was awakened by noise coming from the downstairs area, retrieved a handgun and confronted Williams in the hallway inside the residence.A struggle ensued at which time the gun was accidentally discharged by the victim.The struggle continued out onto the front porch area of the residence where the suspect received a single gunshot wound to the foot.Williams was then able to flee into the woods.

A Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit responded and conducted a search of the wooded area which led to the discovery of the suspect lying in the woods, extremely intoxicated and suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound.The suspect was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released.The homeowner was not injured during this incident.

Following his release from St. Mary’s Hospital, Williams was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, charged with Burglary, Assault 2nd Degree and incarcerated pending an appearance before the District Court Commissioner.

alignment,center mass, natural respiratory pause, squeeze...all basic shooting fundamentals, though that would not have worked in this situation due to CQC...Shooting a person in that type of situation is THE most difficult decision a defender will make (especially here in MD). That decision must be made in a fraction of a second BEFORE it becomes a struggle to maintain control of any weapon. Had the home owner given up control i'm sure it would have been used against him....Another victory for the would-be victim, yet the media will never admit that a firearm could ever be used for anything positive.

Sounds like this extremely intoxicated kid nearly wrestled the gun away from this responsible gun owner, and it's only dumb luck that he wasn't killed by his own gun.

I don't know how this whole thing panned out, but I, for one, can tell you that I wouldn't be getting close to him.

One of the most recognized sounds in the world is the chambering of a 12ga. No need to get close enought to wrestle.

There are tons of stories where citizens have used their personal weapons to protect themselves, and without their own protection, the police would not have been able to do anything. Kind of like my friend who had some guy chase his wife into the houseafter walking her dog only to find himself staring down the barrel of my buddy's glock.

Studies have shown that you are more likely to be killed by a gun if you live in a house with a gun. Normal domestic disputes in armed households are far more likely to end with someone being killed by that very gun that was supposed to protect the family. There was just recently a murder case in St. Mary's County where the wife killed the husband with one of their many household handguns.

Actually @Krozz, the studies that showed your more likely to shoot a family than a robber were flawed studies done under dubious motives.

I would encourage you to review the details of the study and reject the gun control myth.

And who is the anonymous GunCite that refutes the Kellerman study, colwarden? A gun rights lobbying group? I'm not anti-gun, and I do keep guns in my home, but I'm not pro-gun either. I understand the risks of keeping a gun in the home, and I've been well-trained in the handling of guns.

I hear people make bold statements on how they would have shot this drunk kid dead if he had broken into their home, but the truth is that killing another human is a difficult thing to do, especially for a law-abiding citizen. It looks like the homeowner couldn't bring himself to actually shoot the intruder when he had the opportunity, and nearly lost control of the gun to the unarmed drunk. He could have been killed by his own gun just as Gary Trogdon was.

Pointing a gun at someone, pulling the trigger, and killing him isn't as easy as a video game.

Shooting someone dead sounds easy after the-fact, that's very true, but it's a matter of training. If someone wants a gun, you should have to go through a course (like I did). All I'm saying is that responsible gun owners should know when and how to use them to protect themselves.

When we were living in Marrero, LA a young man (15 years old)broke into a neighbor's house and was confronted by other neighbors. He ended up shotting one of our neighbors to death. It's a tough decision whether to call 911 or face the intruder with a gun.

Real reason?
Isn't this the fault of St. Mary's College? After all, if they didn't build the new boat house he would have amused himself driving up and down route 5 enjoying the view. Basic St. Mary's City pass time.

Still drunk of course, but enjoying the view nevertheless. Yep, its not his fault at all.

What? Two times with in a month?
Correct me if I'm worry, But didn't something like this just happen in the same area a few weeks a go. I remember seeing something about a homeowner holding a man at gun point in what I believe was the same neighborhood. That definitely should win the award for best neighborhood watch area. To bad for Mr. Williams, not to have read the first Story.. St. Inigoes an't play'n.

he's lucky he only got a gun shot to the foot.. if he broke into my house, the cops wouldn't have had to search for him in a wooded area, he'd be in very visible sight for the morg to come get him.

Please do not have a blind liberal mindset. Take off your blinders and open your eyes. Now, having said that. I understand your emotional anti-reasoning to having a gun in the home. You let emotions cloud your mind. By that same line of anti-reasoning, knives, bats, and hammers should be banned also. They have been used in domestic assaults. Case in point, a major league baseball player was just stabbed to death by his brother. Yes, these are tragedies. Those people let their emotions control them. That doesn't mean the rest of us will turn to violence because we have a fight with our spouse or whoever we are in a relationship with. Nor should Americans be treated like irresponsible children by liberals because of the actions of a few. But, I digress. My point is that the police cannot protect you. They never have been able to. This is not an indictment on law enforcement. I had family in law enforcement. I respect and support them for doing an almost impossible job. They can't see into the future to prevent crime and they can't stand outside your door 24/7 or escort you when you leave your home.
In short, refuse to be a victim. Be an American and take responsibility for the protection of you, your family, and your home. Criminals should be afraid of you.

Try taking of your own reading blinders Just_me2. I said nothing of banning guns. As I stated, I am NOT anti-gun, and have 3 of my own in the house. But I'm not pro-gun either. To me, a gun is just a tool.

However, I firmly believe that more guns correlates to more gun deaths/injuries. There is a risk to having guns. I do not think guns in the home keep us safe.

Well thank you Mr. WIlliams for keeping me up all night. The chopper flying around and shining its light everywhere was lovely at 4-6am! He probably left the college party down the street. That's comforting to know. We will press the LL to stop renting to college kids- they are obivously not responsible. Such a nice town to be runied by this trash! Good thing we have servailance and big dogs!

Reread your posts. You are talking out both sides of your mouth.
One side: "I own three guns and I consider them tools." That sounds like you consider a gun something to be used as needed. Is protecting your person, family, and home from harm a valid use for a tool such as a gun?
If someone has gone over the edge of reason and has become violent, it won't matter the tool used. Fists, blunt force instruments knives or guns. A gun would just happen to be the tool used as opposed to a knife or hammer. It should not be singled out from the others just because it is a gun.
Not to get off the domestic violence topic, but here is an example of tool usage to do harm. My wife's cousin committed suicide by slitting her wrists with a steak knife. What if she had used a gun? Would the outcome have been different? She still would have taken her own life. The only difference would be that there would be people wailing about how she used a gun to commit suicide.

Please back up your study statement. colwarden gives a link to the study he cites. I do agree studies can be slanted to the study sponsors point of view. It is hard to find a study done by a non-partisan.
Let's bottom line this. A homeowner successfully defended himself with a gun from an intruder who attacked him in his home. Enough said.

You give all college students a bad name. I'm glad this punk was arrested, and I hope he's never set free to do something stupid like this again! You break into someones' home to steal from them and then attack them? What kind of drugs was he on? He's really lucky that the victim wasn't aiming for his head, because I think that most people would have. As they say in the military, it's either kill or be killed in a situation like that. Once more, another high five to the cops. This was a good bust as well.

When he knew it wasn't he tried to leave and the so called "victim" told him to get down so Williams did. Then the "victim" held him at gunpoint and Williams tried to leave out of fear. He was running away and the "victim" grabbed him to try to fight him. Williams finally got away and the "victim" shot him in the foot. AND HE DIDN'T STEAL ANYTHING! That homeowner shouldn't have shot him bc he was running away. Just call the police and let them handle it. Don't listen to these stupid sites who don't know what they're talking about.

That sounds like a pretty good and reasonable explanation of what happened. This was probably just a drunken mistake, and not an attempted burglary or assault by this intoxicated SMCM student. It is fortunate that nobody was killed by the gun.

You clearly state that none of us know the real story. In fact, you go on in your post to attack the "so called victim" who was asleep in his own home @ 4:58 in the morning. So, a few folks have made their comments based on the police press release and the story as reported on TBN.

My question for you is: How do you know the "real story"? In order for you to know what happened, you would have had to be there. Were you a witness to all of this? Or, are you claiming to know what happened because you're a friend of Mr. Williams who told YOU what happened? Were you at the same party? Were you also intoxicated?

In other words, you're taking the word of someone who was so drunk that by his own admission, couldn't even recognize his own house? Do you really think that that would be a reliable source? Really?

Imagine if that was you. How would you react to the sound of someone breaking into your home while you were sleep? I know I'd be ready to shoot too. Times are too crazy to ask questions when someone just broke into your house. My first instinct would be self-defense, because you never know what intentions or weapons that the suspect has. Ever hear of a word called RESPONSIBILITY? And if his "friends" were real, they wouldn't have let him do something that stupid! Regardless of the matter, this punk kid had no business drinking in the first place. Did you forget that the legal drinking age is 21? HELLO!! ANYONE HOME UPSTAIRS???

I understand that the locals are extremely upset - I certainly would be also - but to wish this "child" dead!! I completely agree with the idea of asking the community to not rent to college students - BUT - if he was truly running away - there was absolutely no reason to shoot him. Everyone who is posting that they wish him dead - and would shoot him in the head - I wish you perfect children who never make a mistake in their life - this was a HUGE mistake - I get that - but until you have a child who makes a mistake - however huge -or small - you don't know -you just don't know.

We are tired of outsiders coming in our communities and doing what the hell they want to. Gun slinger your right we countians have to protect our selves and our family as it takes the cops to much time to get to the scene. Baldeagle apparently you do not understand all the crime in the county since all the new comers came here. What would you do if someone broke into your home?
