All Charles County public schools will open on time, tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 12. The Board of Education has converted Friday, Sept. 16, to a full day of school for students in order to make up for lost instructional time. Students registered to participate in 4-H activities at the Charles County Fair will receive an excused absence with proper documentation.

Additionally, the two-hour early dismissal on Wednesday, Sept. 14, has been converted to a full day of school for students and the first day of school for prekindergarten students scheduled to begin on Monday, Sept. 12, has been changed to Monday, Sept. 19.

Richmond will also recommend additional school make-up calendar dates to the Board of Education on Tuesday, Sept. 13, during their monthly meeting. The approved changes are to regain instructional time lost due to inclement weather during the past two weeks. School opening was delayed one day and storms, flooding and impassable roads caused schools to be closed on Thursday, Sept. 9, and Friday, Sept. 9.

Due to the road closure on Route 234/Budd’s Creek Road, bus stop locations for some students attending Dr. Thomas L. Higdon Elementary School and La Plata High School were temporarily moved to the Thunderbird Motel located on Route 301. Higdon students affected by the road closure and normally ride bus #46 are being picked up at the motel by bus #701 at 8:30 a.m., and dropped off at 4:20 p.m.

La Plata students affected by the road closures and normally ride bus #702 are being picked up at the motel by bus #97 at 6:50 a.m., and dropped off at 2:40 p.m. Phone calls were placed to parents of all students affected by these changes. Parents with questions in regard to the changes can contact the school system’s transportation department at 301-934-7262.

Eight other bus routes for Higdon and Piccowaxen Middle School have been affected by the road closure, and will result in students possibly arriving 10 to 15 minutes late to school tomorrow. The transportation department will adjust the routes this week to ensure all students are at school by the start of the instructional day. To see what routes may be affected, visit If the bus pick-up times change, schools will send a notification letter home to parents.
