UPDATED ALERT: Charles County Government CLOSED, Road Closures

Due to the extent of road closures and the continuing impact of heavy rain storms throughout the county, Charles County Government administrative offices will be closed today, September 8.  Essential personnel will report, and some essential services may be available to the public.

Portion of Route 301 Southbound Closed in La Plata

Heavy rainfall has caused the shoulder of the southbound lane of Route 301, near the District 1 Sheriff’s Station in La Plata, to be washed away, causing hazardous conditions for motor vehicles.  The State of Maryland has closed the southbound lane of Route 301, from Glen Albin Road to the District 1 Sheriff’s Station, until further notice. Southbound traffic is being detoured to the northbound lane for approximately a 1/8-mile distance.

 Alert: Road Closure Updates

The Charles County Department of Public Works is reporting the following roads are closed to traffic and/or impassable:

Pope’s Creek Road near Captain Billy’s restaurant (mud slide)
Chapel Point Road at bottom of the hill past the church (mud slide)
Mitchell Road
Rosehill Road
Springhill-Newtown Road at Glen Albin Road
Oliver Shop Road
Keech Road
Poplar Hill Road
Shiloh Church Road
Bumpy Oak Road
Billingsley Road near the bridge
Turkey Hill Road
Wendy Lane (road and culvert pipe damage)
Route 301 southbound lane, Glen Albin Rd. to Dist. 1 Sheriff’s Station in La Plata

Multiple county roads have high water or hazardous conditions and are currently impassable.  Citizens are encouraged to stay off the roadways, if possible.  If you must travel on the roads, use extreme caution and do not attempt to travel through flooded areas.  To report a hazardous road condition, contact the Department of Public Works, Roads Division, at 301-932-3440.


South Bound Crain Highway and Port Tobacco Road in the turn lane in front of Popeyes. CCSO is reporting a sink hole approximately 12' by 20'.

County Parks Closed Today

Due to high water and flooding conditions, the Charles County Department of Community Services announces the closing of all parks today, September 8. Gilbert Run Park will remain closed until Monday, September 12. Conditions will continue to be monitored and closures will be updated as necesary.

CSM Charles County Campuses Closed Until 5pm

 The College of Southern Maryland's Charles County Campuses are closed until 5 p.m. today, Sept. 8. Please monitor the emergency closing hotline, 301-369-1999 or 1-800-650-4023, or www.csmd.edu for updates.

Public Information Meeting Canceled

The Dept. of Planning & Growth Management would like to notify citizens that the Strawberry Hills Drainage Public Information Meeting scheduled for tonight at Matthew Henson Middle School is canceled and will be rescheduled at a later date.
