A Calvert County woman was one of two motorists killed Thursday, Aug. 18 in a two-vehicle, head-on collision on Solomons Island Road (Route 2) near Solitude Court in Lothian, Anne Arundel County Police reported.

According to a report filed by Cpl. W.R. Morningstar, the investigating officer, at approximately 5:53 p.m. a 2006 Ford F-350 driven by Robert Leslie Lynch, 57 of Annapolis, was traveling northbound on Route 2. Meanwhile a 2003 Volkswagen Passat driven by Angela Astin, 47 of Chesapeake Beach, was proceeding southbound on Route 2.

“For reasons unknown, the Ford van crossed the double yellow line and traveled into the southbound lane. The Ford van struck the Volkswagen head-on,” an Anne Arundel County Police Department press release stated. “As a result of the crash, both vehicles left the roadway and the van caught fire.”

Both Astin and Lynch were pronounced dead at the scene by Anne Arundel County Fire Department paramedics, police reported.

Morningstar reported that speed does not appear to have been a factor in the collision. The accident remains under investigation by the Anne Arundel County Police Department Traffic Safety Section.
